19 killed as crippled plane ditches in Med.


AT least 19 people were killed when a passenger jet crashed into the Mediterranean yesterday.

Rescue teams were last night attempting to save 20 survivors Survivors was a British television series devised by Terry Nation and produced by Terence Dudley at the BBC from 1975 to 1977. It concerned the plight of a group of people who had survived an accidentally released plague that had killed nearly the entire population of the  from the accident.

The jet had been heading from Italy to Tunisia when it went down eight miles off Sicily.

Survivors were seen clinging to the plane's wings.

 said yesterday the pilot had reported engineproblems and that he was heading for Palermo in Sicily.

A spokeswoman said: ``It was trying to land in Palermo but had to land in the sea.''

Italian TV said badly shocked survivors were being pulled from the sea by coastguard boats.

The plane was operated by Tuninter, an affiliate of Tunisair
