Byline: Krystn Shrieve Staff Writer

CAMARILLO - Military veterans, job-training specialists and mental health advocates will meet today to discuss the support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  they'd like to bring to a 17-acre site that county officials want to use for housing.

The land is one of five potential sites for a new juvenile justice facility, but Supervisor Frank Schillo of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  has said he anticipates that environmental reports will show it is too small to support such a facility. Instead, he proposes that the county-owned property on Lewis Road in Camarillo be used to create a campus for veterans, the mentally ill and homeless residents.

``It makes more sense for us to be part of a collaboration,'' said Clyde Reynolds, executive director of Turning Point Foundation, a nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

that offers rehabilitation services to more than 1,000 mentally ill people in Ventura County. ``There are benefits and common services people can take advantage of. It will be great to bring everyone together - the homeless, battered women, veterans and the mentally ill.''

Schillo hopes the project can be modeled after The Villages at Cabrillo, a transitional housing project in Long Beach built on 26 acres of a former naval facility. In addition to housing, that project includes a veterans medical clinic, child care, a K-8 school especially for children who are transitory and a training center that helps many of the 921 residents get jobs.

CSUCI opened in 2002 as the twenty-third campus in the California State University system, succeeding the Ventura County branch campus of , site.

``At this point, the discussions are about a potential site and a potential plan,'' said Carolyn Briggs, site director of the Veterans Initiative Inc., which played a key role in the Long Beach project. ``Looking at The Villages as a model, we want to figure out if this is something we would want to do in Ventura County and what pieces would work.''

Some organizations that have expressed an interest in being part of the campus include the Area Housing Authority, the Building Industry Association and Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife. . Some of the county agencies expected to attend include RAIN, the county's homeless shelter Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. ; CalWORKs, the county's welfare-to-work program, and the Behavioral Health Behavioral health was first used in the 1980's to name the combination of the fields mental health and substance abuse. As an example, an organization serving both mental health and substance abuse clients might refer to its practice as behavioral health or  Department.

Reynolds likes the idea of seeing all of the services together in one location.

``I've been down to see the project at Long Beach,'' Reynolds said. ``I've seen the potential of something like this.''
