WELL-WISHERS sent a record number of texts as they saw in 2006.

The total for New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25.  hit 165 million - the highest daily figure yet.

The Mobile Data Association said the hourly average was 6.9million.

The total figure was 24 per cent up on the 133million sent last New Year's Day in the UK.

It is predicted texting will increase even further in 2006 with about 100 million a day, compared with 2005's average of 82 million.
