The competition for this year's scholarship program started in 1998, when students who were juniors then took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Nearly 1.2 million students in more than 20,000 high schools entered the competition, which was narrowed down to 16,000 semifinalists. To become a finalist, students must have an excellent high school record, be recommended by their principal and submit good SAT scores. They must also complete an application and an essay about themselves. About 90 percent of the semifinalists will ultimately be named finalists.
