The Rebels are seeking a successor to Alan Mathews Alan Mathews (born 27 June, 1965 in Dublin) is a former Irish footballer and is currently manager of Longford Town. Appointed club manager in July 2002, Mathews is a former Longford Town player who played for the club under Dermot Keely in the early 1990s. who was surprisingly sacked by new chairman Tom Coughlan. The deadline for applications closed on Friday night and the club is satisfied with the level of interest in the position. A spokesman said: "It was expected there would be considerable interest in the position, but the club is delighted with extremely impressive calibre of the candidates, from both Ireland and abroad, who have put their name forward." Coughlan is currently sifting through the applications and the interview process will begin in the first week of January. But Cork stress only candidates with the relevant UEFA UEFA Union of European Football Associations UEFA n abbr (= Union of European Football Associations) → U.E.F.A. coaching qualifications will be considered.
