Customer Showcase: UniHealth Chooses PeopleSoft For HR Management

Based in Burbank, California, UniHealth is one of the nation's
largest voluntary nonprofit healthcare networks serving a population
of over 11 million in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In 1994,
UniHealth began a corporate-wide migration to client/server computing
by identifying 16 of the company's information systems to be
converted.
UniHealth purchased PeopleSoft Human Resources, Payroll, Benefits
Administration, and Pension Administration in March, 1995. These
applications will run on a Sun SPARC server and 486 PC clients on
ORACLE. PeopleSoft will be the first client/server business
application to go into production, and the company is using the
PeopleSoft implementation as the driving force behind putting a local
area network (LAN) into place corporate-wide.
According to Robin Byers, UniHealth's administrative director of
HRIS, "Replacing our mainframe-based, in-house developed human
resources systems, as well as a number of outsourced functions, with
PeopleSoft's client/server applications will save UniHealth an
estimated $4.1 million over 5 years."
Initially, over 120 users in the human resources department will
access the system regularly. Part of UniHealth's vision for the
future is to provide access to each of the company's 11,000 employees
through PCs and kiosks for direct deposit, W4, and address changes,
as well as enable them to apply for job openings within the
organization, answer climate surveys, and remind their superior it is
time for a performance appraisal.

PeopleSoft and Client/Server in the Health Care Market

There is a "survival of the fittest" struggle taking place in
the health care industry in which all organizations are re-examining
every aspect of their services and becoming more cost conscious than
ever before. As a result of countless mergers and acquisitions, many
single-unit hospitals, once dedicated solely to healing the sick,
have evolved into integrated health care delivery systems, comprised
of a variety of multi-site hospitals, clinics, medical centers,
medical colleges, skilled nursing facilities, and managed care
organizations. These integrated delivery systems have increasingly
complex needs, and therefore require industrial strength solutions
that are uniform, flexible, easy-to-use, and cost-effective. More
and more, client/server systems are becoming the information systems
of choice for meeting the dynamic reporting, data-analysis, and
management needs of this market.
Because its client/server applications are designed to support
large, dynamic, and rapidly changing organizations, many leading
health care suppliers are turning to PeopleSoft to support their
strategic goals. PeopleSoft addresses the unique needs of the market
through its dedicated health care marketing unit.

About PeopleSoft's Health Care SIG

The recently formed Health Care Special Interest Group was
established to provide customers in various stages of implementation
a forum to share implementation successes and ideas with each other
and PeopleSoft health care experts. The group previously met in
Northbrook, Illinois at the corporate headquarters of Caremark
International, a PeopleSoft HRMS customer.
PeopleSoft provided a review of current and future product
additions, focusing on applications especially suited for health care
organizations, as well as an explanation of recent technical
enhancements. A number of customer-led roundtable discussions
focused on end user reporting, affirmative action compliance, project
management, and the upgrade process provided valuable insight for
other customers.
The next bi-annual Health Care SIG meeting will be held in
September, 1995, at PeopleSoft's annual users' conference in Orlando,
Florida.
