15,000 Needy Kids Get Free Back-to-School Clothes at 7th Annual ChildSpree; Mervyn's California Stores Nationwide Host August 7 Event.HAYWARD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 2, 1999-- Mervyn's California is hosting its seventh annual ChildSpree event for nearly 15,000 underprivileged kids from non-profit community organizations, including the Salvation Army Salvation Army, Protestant denomination and international nonsectarian Christian organization for evangelical and philanthropic work. Mervyn's will provide an average of $100 to children -- most from low-income families -- to spend on brand-new back-to-school clothes and shoes, in addition to giving a ten percent discount on all purchases during the event. Mervyn's will contribute $3,000 per store, more than $800,000. Each store will then partner with local organizations to clothe 15,000 school-age kids. Local non-profit and community organizations have raised additional funds for the local sprees with generous support from area businesses and Mervyn's sister-store, Target.
