14th USC Scripter Nominees Announced.

LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2002

The writers of "A Beautiful Mind," "Bridget Jones's Diary," "In the Bedroom," "Lord of the Rings" and "The Shipping News" have been nominated for the University of Southern California's 14th Scripter(R) Award, the only honor that recognizes both the author and screenwriter for a film adaptation.

Nominees for this year's award are (in alphabetical order by film title):

"A Beautiful Mind" -- Akiva Goldsman, screenwriter; Sylvia Nasar, author (Universal Pictures, Imagine Entertainment; Simon & Schuster Simon & Schuster

"Bridget Jones's Diary" -- Helen Fielding and Andrew Davies and Richard Curtis, screenwriters; Helen Fielding, author (Miramax, Universal Pictures; Picador)

"In the Bedroom" -- Rob Festinger and Todd Field, screenwriters; Andre Dubus, author, "Killings," published in Selected Stories (Miramax; Vintage)

"Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" -- Frances Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson, screenwriters; J.R.R. Tolkien, author (New Line Cinema; Houghton Mifflin)

"The Shipping News" -- Robert Nelson Jacobs, screenwriter; E. Annie Proulx Edna Annie Proulx (pronounced /pru:/) (born August 22, 1935) is an American journalist and author. Her second novel, The Shipping News , author (Columbia Pictures, Miramax, TriStar Pictures; Simon & Schuster)

Winners of this year's award will be announced on January 15 at 8 a.m.

The annual black-tie gala dinner honoring the winning collaboration will be held on Saturday, March 16 in the Edward L. Doheny Edward Laurence Doheny (August 10, 1856 - September 8, 1935) was an American oil tycoon.

Doheny was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. His family history reaches back to Ireland when his family fled in the wake of the Great Famine.

Ruddy ("The Godfather"), chair of this year's 50-member Scripter selection committee, announced the nominees today on behalf of the Friends of the USC Libraries, which sponsors the award. The selection committee is comprised of Writers Guild of America The Writers Guild of America is a term often referring to the joint efforts of the Writers Guild of America, East and the Writers Guild of America, west. Jointly, the two guilds act as the collective bargaining representative, or labor union, for writers in the motion picture and  members, Academy Award(R)-winning and -nominated screenwriters, authors, film industry executives, faculty, and selected members of the Friends of the USC Libraries. The committee narrows down the year's eligible films to five nominees and then chooses that year's best film adaptation.
