14-MILE FOOTHILL FREEWAY EXTENSION OPENS AFTER CEREMONIES.

Byline: L.C. Greene Staff Writer

Cars, motor homes and trucks blazed a new concrete trail through the northern Inland Empire In·land Empire

A region of the northwest United States between the Cascade Range and the Rocky Mountains, comprising eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, northern Idaho, and western Montana. Farming, lumbering, and mining are important to the area.
as the barricades were finally lifted and 14 more miles of the Foothill Freeway extension cleared for traffic on Sunday afternoon.

``This is a glorious day,'' California Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Maria Contreras-Sweet said during ceremonies a few hours before the freeway opened at about 4 p.m. Sunday.

State and local dignitaries, dozens of Caltrans workers and a standing- room-only crowd were there for the eagerly anticipated ribbon cutting.

The ceremonies, including music by a string quartet string quartet

, requisite speeches by elected officials and a parade of vintage cars, were held on the freeway's eastbound lanes at the boundary between Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States

 counties.

The 14-mile, $689 million extension represents a continuation of the Foothill Freeway from Foothill Boulevard The following streets are named Foothill Boulevard:
  • Foothill Boulevard (Southern California)
  • Foothill Boulevard (East Bay, California)
in La Verne east to Day Creek Boulevard in Rancho Cucamonga, where the road links to an already-opened six-mile segment continuing on across Interstate 15 to Sierra Avenue in Fontana.

The vision for a freeway along the north Inland Empire dates back to the 1950s, Claremont City Councilman Al Leiga noted.

``We've been waiting 50 years for this,'' he said.

The wait for the remainder of the 28-mile extension on the east side of Interstate 15 will continue for about five more years.

Construction on the $207 million segment from Rialto Rialto, city (1990 pop. 72,388), San Bernardino co., S Calif., a residential suburb of San Bernardino; inc. 1911. The city has greatly expanded as a result of the economic and demographic growth of the southern California area.  to the Interstate 215 in San Bernardino is expected to begin next year. It is scheduled for completion by 2007.

Commuters and traffic engineers expect the new stretch to cut drive times and relieve rush-hour traffic jams on several east-west Inland Empire arteries, including Base Line Road, Foothill Boulevard and Arrow Highway, and to pull some drivers off the often-clogged Interstate 10 San Bernardino Freeway The San Bernardino Freeway is the assigned name of an approximately 60-mile (95 km) long segment of Interstate 10 (I-10) between the cities of Los Angeles, California and San Bernardino, California. .
