Byline: Bhavna Mistry Daily News Staff Writer

Fourteen children who died from child abuse over the past five years were remembered Wednesday as civic leaders dedicated the Antelope antelope, name applied to a large number of hoofed, ruminant mammals of the cattle family (Bovidae), which also includes the sheep and goats. The North American pronghorn is sometimes called an antelope, but belongs to a separate, related family (Antilocapridae).  Valley's second flower garden in their honor.

The dedication caps the monthlong child abuse awareness campaign sponsored by the Children's Center of the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

A similar but smaller garden was dedicated outside the Lancaster Western Hotel Museum on March 31 to mark the start of the campaign.

``This is designed to create awareness year-round,'' said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford. ``It's something that we can't tolerate in the area.''

The Children's Center of the Antelope Valley, which provides counseling and therapy to victims of child abuse, distributed 65,000 brochures over the past month telling how to recognize child abuse and where parents can go for help if they fear losing control with their children.

``The goal was to inform and make people aware,'' said Esther Gillies, executive director of the Children's Center of the Antelope Valley. ``And that has been achieved.''
