``I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in my whole life,'' said truck driver Pablo Orejel, who walked away from his jackknifed tractor-trailer with minor cuts and bruises.

Orejel, whose truck was the 10th to become involved, said other drivers had radioed ahead and warned him of a disabled rig seconds before the crash, but it was too late.

``Everything happened too fast,'' he said of the wreck. ``It was a matter of seconds.''

The incident began at 3:42 a.m. when a big rig emerged from a tunnel, turned to avoid another truck and careened into a cement rail, according to CHP CHP Chapter

``It had to be one of the worst freeway pileups involving trucks in recent memory. It was some wreck,'' said CHP Officer Gary Butler, a 19-year veteran.

Late Friday, when the rain first began to fall, the driver of an Acura swerved to avoid another vehicle and lost control of the car at Balboa Boulevard and Lassen Street in Northridge.

The Acura crashed into a light pole at about 10 p.m., causing severe injuries to a 23-year-old passenger.
