The program, now in its 13th year in Dallas, allows the selected agencies to hire a college student for an eight-week internship to gain a broad perspective of the important role these nonprofit agencies have in our community. ExxonMobil will provide grants totaling more than $182,000 for interns' salaries and Volunteer Center expenses. "The Community Summer Jobs Program is a signature program and an integral part of ExxonMobil's community contributions and outreach programs," said Ken Cohen, ExxonMobil's vice president for public affairs. "This particular program is unique because it allows talented college students to be introduced to opportunities in the nonprofit sector, while providing vital services to the city of Dallas through their internships." Training in recruiting and selecting interns is offered to the agencies, as well as assistance in organizing the summer internships. The summer interns are selected by the participating agencies, and must be full-time college students. In addition to regular job responsibilities, interns are required to attend seminars structured to give the interns broader exposure to the nonprofit sector, community needs and volunteerism. "We are grateful to ExxonMobil for offering this type of program, especially in these tough times when nonprofit organizations are facing economic hardships," said Julie Thomas, executive director of the Volunteer Center. "The ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program offers students an extraordinary learning experience, and introduces the interns to the many career opportunities available in the nonprofit sector." Since the program began in 1971 in New York City, ExxonMobil has provided more than $4.6 million to support almost 2,400 community summer job internships in ten states including: Alabama, Alaska, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming, and internationally in Angola.
