1394/FireWire/i.LINK in New Products

The 1394 Trade Association today announced that it will send its executives and directors to China next month to meet with officials at leading electronics companies and government organizations in Beijing and Shanghai.

While many Chinese PC manufacturers have already adopted the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  1394 standard, which is marketed as FireWire(TM) and i.LINK(TM), developers of DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates  and digital devices. Major PC peripherals manufacturers also are interested in designing high end scanners and digital cameras using IEEE 1394, and want to use it in their I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

James Snider, executive director of the 1394 Trade Association.

"China is the world's fastest-growing electronics market, and we are seeing a very high level of interest in 1394 among leaders of the major computer, consumer products and peripherals manufacturers," said Snider. "Many more new products are coming to market from the Chinese economy. Also, we expect new levels of design activity as we move to 1394b, the new version of the standard."

The 1394b version provides new levels of performance and capability, including 800 Megabits/second bandwidth and 100 meter distances over plastic optical fiber Plastic optical fiber (POF) is an optical fiber which is made out of plastic. traditionally PMMA (acrylic) is the core material, and fluorinated polymers are the cladding material.  and category 5 (CAT-5) cable. It has been designed to scale all the way to 3.2 Gigabits/second and to 500 meters over glass optical fiber.

The Trade Association team will include Snider, Max Bassler of Molex, the 1394 Trade Association vice chairman, and two board members, Dr. Jalil Oraee of England's Oxford Semiconductor and Sam Liu of Newnex, Inc. They will present the benefits of IEEE 1394 in notebook computers, PC peripherals and consumer electronics equipment, ranging from digital cameras and HDTVs to hard disk drives, printers and scanners. The meetings are scheduled for April 8 through April 12 in Shanghai and Beijing.

They will visit Zhangjiang High Tech Park (www.zjpark.com), a government-sponsored high tech center in China, where two TSMC TSMC Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd
