First Quarter Introductions

The 1394 Trade Association announced FireWire-equipped consumer and computer products for the first quarter, including an impressive list of introductions at the Electronic House Expo in Orlando March 11-13.

LG Electronics (http://us.lge.com/index.do) solidified its commitment to the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  1394 standard, introducing the following TVs and recorder products:

DU-PY10 50" Plasma Integrated HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates

TU-60SZ31 60" LCD Integrated HDTV, featuring rear projection with DVR (1) (Digital Video Recorder) A device that records video onto a hard disk from one or more ceiling mounted video cameras. Part of a security system, the DVR typically supports 4, 8 or 16 separate camera channels.

Integra Systems (www.integrahometheater.com) launched its DTR-10.5 Audio/Video Receiver and Universal DVD Player at the spring EH Expo, while Integra Research (www.integraresearch.com) introduced the RDC-7.1 A/V Receiver and RDV-1.1 High performance Universal DVD Player.

In addition, Panasonic (www.panasonic.com) continued its leadership in 1394-enabled products and technology with the announcement of its new DMR-E100HS DVD Video Recorder/Player.

Also, Samsung Electronics (www.samsungusa.com) introduced a full set of camcorders and DVD recorders that will become widely available by the end of April. They include the following:

DVD-R (DVD-Recordable) A write-once (read only) DVD disc for both movies and data endorsed by the DVD Forum. DVD-Rs are often called "DVD Dash Rs" or "DVD Minus Rs" to distinguish them from the competing "Plus R" format (see DVD+R). 100 DVD Recorder

Also introduced during the first quarter were new FireWire-equipped DVD-RW (DVD-Read Write) A rewritable (re-recordable) DVD disc for both movies and data from the DVD Forum. Also called "DVD Dash RW" and "DVD Minus RW," DVD-RW uses phase change recording. The media hold 4.7GB per side and can be rewritten 1,000 times.  hard drives from Kanguru Solutions (www.kanguru.com/dvdrw.html) and 1394-enabled DVD-R/RW drives from Plextor (www.plextor.com/english/).
