135 Children From Chernobyl Enjoy Summer Break in America At Showcase Cinemas and Variety Club Events Far Away From the Devastation At Home.

DEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2000

On Sunday July 16, 2000, Showcase Cinemas and the Variety Club of New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  will entertain 135 Russian children and their interpreters on an American holiday far away from the devastation they know at home in Chernobyl. "National Amusements is strongly committed to children in this country and abroad," said Shari E. Redstone, president of National Amusements. "It's important that our theatres give back to disadvantaged kids."

Following the movie, the children will enjoy an American cookout with hot dogs and hamburgers as well as scenic hayrides, pony rides and a visit to a traveling zoo provided by Showcase and the City of Lynn.

Variety is a children's charity that helps sponsor orphanages and schools for needy children. The Variety Club of New England and the Boston Braves founded the "Jimmy Fund" for cancer research in the early forties.
