Lancaster (lăng`kəstər), city (1991 pop. 43,902) and district, county seat of Lancashire, NW England, on the Lune River.
 - Thirteen people have applied to fill the Antelope Valley Union High School Districts The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
 board seat left vacant by trustee Darrel Brown's resignation in February.

Candidates include former trustee E. Jarold Wright, who served on the high school board from 1968 to 1990; Donita Winn, who headed the district's campaign to pass a $103.6 million school bond; former Lancaster planning commissioner and high school teacher Charles Keortge, and retired district administrator Gloria Dizmang.

Other applicants are Andrea Boynoff, Dawn Conry, Garry Cope, Dwain Deets, Rubbie Hodge, Fred Allen For the New Zealand rugby union player and coach, see .

The board is scheduled to hold a special meeting today at 5 p.m. to interview and possibly select a replacement. If an appointment is made, the person will take office immediately.

If the board does not make an appointment by April 22, then Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County officials will call an election to fill the seat. Brown's term runs through November 2003.

Registered voters in the district can, by law, within 30 days of the appointment, petition for a special election to fill the vacancy VACANCY. A place which is empty. The term is principally applied to cases where an office is not filled.
     2. By the constitution of the United States, the president has the power to fill up vacancies that may happen during the recess of the senate.

Trustees in March decided to appoint someone to fill the board seat rather than hold an election, which they said would be too costly.

The estimated cost of an election held with the regularly scheduled general election in November was $150,000.
