The 13 winners, chosen from among 62 finalists, will compete for the honor of state Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in November.

``I can't think of anything in the world where you feel like you make a difference more than being able to give ideas to a kid or inspire a student,'' said Franklin, 31, of Burbank, who teaches social studies and student government at Sun Valley Middle School.

``It is so rewarding. Who wouldn't want to do that?''

His principal, Jeff Davis Jeff Davis may refer to:

``And they're funny - they're just now coming into their sarcastic own.''

Labinger, 48, of West Hollywood said her fourth-graders at Edison Elementary in Glendale have taught her that sometimes lesson plans go out the window when the children become excited about a subject.

A heavy rain a few years ago produced a bumper crop of worms, which turned into a science lesson that continued through the rest of the year, she said.

``Teaching is more than what goes on in the four walls of the classroom,'' Labinger said. ``They taught me that.''

Strong, 51, of Stevenson Ranch teaches first- and second-grade students at Bret Harte Elementary in Burbank.

``I love their openness and honesty,'' said Strong, who has been teaching for 25 years.

``They're ready for their educational journey and I can start them off on the right foot. I have the chance to help them develop the skills that will make them into lifelong learners.''
