13 ARRESTED, FOOD SEIZED IN RAID ON ILLEGAL VENDORS.

Thirteen people were arrested and 10 push carts and 2,000 pounds of oranges, grapefruit grapefruit, pomelo (pŏm`əlō), or pummelo (pum`məlō), citrus fruit (Citrus paradisi) of the family Rutaceae (orange family). , mangoes and other food items were seized during a police sweep Saturday morning targeting illegal street vendors.

``It's not to crush them. It's to get them to comply with safety rules,'' said Sgt. Ed Brayton of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys station. ``They're selling fruit that's been cut open, it's been sitting out in the sun, people handle it. You buy it, you put it into your mouth. (You) can get all sorts of different diseases from that.''

Thirteen vendors were arrested mostly for operating without a business or health license, and violating safety codes, like storing meat in hazardously warm temperatures, and letting people handle food for sale, Brayton said. All were immediately released, he said.
