Traffic highlights for the year ending March 2001 were: -- For the third year running, Stansted was the fastest growing major airport in Europe -- this year increasing by 23.8% from 9.9 to 12.3 million passengers. -- Continued buoyant growth at Gatwick (+5.6%) which took it to a total of 32.1 million, with its large North Atlantic market up by 7.5%. -- Heathrow achieved growth of 3.3% despite the increasing effects of capacity constraints. -- Growth of 4.5% in Scotland where Edinburgh's newly renovated and extended terminal helped it to a 7.5% increase during the year. -- An overall 8.9% increase in traffic on long haul routes other than North Atlantic. -- An increase of 7.9% in passengers on European scheduled flights, thanks largely to another huge increase in this traffic at Stansted (+45.2%), predominantly driven by the appeal of its low fare services. For the year, air transport movements for the group grew by 2.5% and cargo increased by 0.5%.
