`` `They're burning. They're burning! Wake up!' '' Lopez's husband told her.

The dead included a boy, 12 or 13 years old, said Amado Gallardo, a spokesman for the border city's coroner's office. Details on the other victims were not immediately available.

The fire broke out about 5 a.m. in what authorities described as one of Tijuana's oldest apartment buildings. Firefighters said the building was poorly constructed, with units that were only about 9 feet by 9 feet.

Forty people were homeless after the fire. Fire investigators would begin searching for the cause of the blaze BLAZE - A single assignment language for parallel processing.
