"When my son Brendan died shortly after his 18th birthday of Ewings Sarcoma sarcoma (särkō`mə), highly malignant tumor arising in connective- and muscle-cell tissue. It is the result of oncogenes (the cancer causing genes of some viruses) and proto-oncogenes (cancer causing genes in human cells). , a pediatric bone cancer, it was a difficult time for those of us he left behind. Out of this sadness and our love for Brendan, our family, our friends and our community built the Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund that responds to the needs of pediatric cancer patients and their families," said Lydia Borek, founder, Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund.

"Each year cancer kills more children than any other disease combined. The Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund is an example of how we join hands and efforts in a `circle of love' that surrounds families during the crisis of their child's illness, as a search for a cure for cancer continues," Ms. Borek added.

At last year's Brendan Borek Surf Memorial, over 2,000 people attended the surfing competition alone, with 250 surfers competing, and with 800 in attendance at the Homecoming Party. Over $119,000 was raised from last year's total fundraising efforts, and organizers hope to top that number as the Surf Memorial enters its 11th year.

A Legacy of Love

Brendan Borek loved live, and life, it seemed, loved Brendan. An avid surfer, gifted artist, and an agile soccer player, his teenage years mirrored life at its fullest. Cancer brought life as he knew it to an abrupt, unexpected end.

A champion, he vied against death with courage and dignity until cancer claimed him in December 1991, at the age of 18. Because Brendan touched the hearts of many, the Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund, Inc. was established by his family and friends.
