11TH-INNING SINGLE PUTS JETHAWKS OVER TOP AGAINST MODESTO.

Byline: Bryan Winchell Special to the Daily News

Shane Monahan needed just one pitch.

He got it - a 2-1 curveball down the middle of the plate - and sent it into center field for a game-winning single with the bases loaded in the 11th inning to give Lancaster a 7-6 hang-on victory over Modesto (27-22) in front of 5,303 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium.

``We're starting to hit the ball, getting clutch hits in clutch situations and doing the little things right again,'' Monahan said.

After Mike Lanza singled and Scot Sealy doubled to put runners on second and third with one out, Modesto pitcher Jason Rajotte intentionally walked Marcus Sturdivant to set up a force situation at all bases with Monahan up.

As Monahan waited for Rajotte to walk Sturdivant, he had a conversation with Jose Cruz Jose Luis Cruz (Cheo) can refer to different people:

``He told me one pitch, one spot, one swing. That's all it had to take to win it,'' Monahan said.

For the Lancaster (24-27) pitching staff, the old adage that leadoff walks usually lead to runs was proved true.

Montane, who entered the game third in the Cal League with 37 walks, had difficulty finding the plate, walking six in five innings.

But after walking the leadoff batter in the first and second innings, he didn't allow a run, working out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning.

, and this time it cost him.

Modesto right fielder Ben Grieve hit a ground ball under first baseman James Clifford's glove for an error, allowing Castro to score, and Moore hit a two-out, two-run double to close the gap 4-3.

Modesto scored two more runs in the fifth inning, and again Montane's walk of the leadoff batter, Tejada, hurt him. Moore doubled in Tejada, and Jeff D'Amico drove in Rob De Boer with a sacrifice fly.

But the JetHawks bounced right back, as Monahan singled in Luis Molina, and Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Sturdivant for a 6-5 lead.

Montane, who allowed five runs (two earned) and struck out three in five innings, left the game, and Tim Trawick threw a scoreless sixth inning before putting two batters on with one out in the seventh.

Tom Szimanski struck out the next two batters to escape the inning and threw a 1-2-3 eighth.

The JetHawks took the 4-0 lead behind a three-run second inning. Lancaster had four singles in the inning.
