-- Vaulting Champions Coming to National Horse Show --

Some outstanding young athletes will demonstrate the skills that earned them medals at the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome this fall when they appear at the National Horse Show Nov. 5-8 at Madison Square Garden.

Devon Maitozo won the individual goal medal for vaulting in the men's division, and Kerith Lemon took the silver medal in the women's division. Their team also earned a bronze medal. Maitozo and Lemon are from the Mt. Eden Vaulting Club in Saratoga, California Saratoga (IPA: /ˌsærəˈtoʊgə/[1]) is a city in Santa Clara County, California, USA. It is located on the west side of the Santa Clara Valley, in the San Francisco Bay Area. .

"They are highly motivated, dedicated to the sport and willing to step beyond the norm," said coach Emma Drinker. "Both are quite strong and have good stretch. They have the ability to move with the horse, which is a combination between gymnastics and riding."

Maitozo, 22, is a two-time men's national champion and a veteran of the Vaulting World Championships (he won the bronze medal in Hungary in 1996). Lemon, 22, is a seven-time women's national champion and won a silver medal at The Hague. Maitozo and Lemon, both native Californians, have competed extensively in the U.S., Europe and South America South America, fourth largest continent (1991 est. pop. 299,150,000), c.6,880,000 sq mi (17,819,000 sq km), the southern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . Their horse at the National will be Van Dyke Van Dyke (or van/Van Dijk or Dyk etc) is a surname of Dutch origin. It refers to:
  • Sir Anthony van Dyck, (1599 – 1641), Flemish-born painter who lived in England
  • Barry Van Dyke (born 1951), American actor, son of Dick Van Dyke
, a Shire-Thoroughbred cross.

Other members of the World Equestrian Games bronze medal team appearing at the National Horse Show are: Jill Main, 16; Peter Frola 17; Danielle Teitelman 18; Jessica Fredericks, 14; and Tory Van Wey n. 1. Way; road; path.

Vaulting might best be defined as gymnastics on horseback on the back of a horse; mounted or riding on a horse or horses; in the saddle.

. As the horse canters in a circle, the vaulters perform various exercises required in competition, such as the mill, the free stand and the scissors scissors

. As many as three riders may be performing on one horse at a time. A background in gymnastics and dance is as important to a vaulter as riding. The sport dates back to ancient Rome Ancient Rome was a civilization that grew from a small agricultural community founded on the Italian Peninsula circa the 9th century BC to a massive empire straddling the Mediterranean Sea. .

Maitozo and Lemon will execute freestyle routines (similar to freeskating) to music. The other vaulters will exhibit their team skills on a Percheron called King. Fredericks and Van Wey are "flyers," who, as coach Isabelle Bibbler laughingly explained, "get to be up very high." Standing on a team member's shoulders, Van Wey's head is about 16 1/2 feet off the ground.

"It's been a lot of work this year, but it turned out great," said Bibbler. Medaling at the World Equestrian Games was special. And the National Horse Show?

"That's the candle on top of the icing on the cake," said Bibbler.
