112 DECLARE CANDIDACY FOR CHARTER PANEL : CHARTER COMMISSIONER CANDIDATES.

Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer

Declarations were filed by 112 candidates by Monday's deadline to run for a charter reform commission on the April 8 ballot, as Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , city unions, neighborhood activists and other groups were lining up behind candidates for rival slates.

, who with Riordan co-sponsored the initiative creating the commission, said he was surprised and overwhelmed by the large number of people who filed declarations of intent to run for the unpaid panel.

``I'm really delighted at the outpouring of people interested in this,'' Fleming said.

On the last day for candidates to declare their intent to run, 62 people filed papers Monday, including City Treasurer J. Paul Brownridge, community college board member Gloria Romero Gloria J. If voters approve the initiative on the April 8 ballot, the same ballot will allow voters to elect a member of the charter reform commission from each of the 15 City Council districts.

By the close of filing Monday, every council district was contested, with an average of more than seven candidates per district.

The heaviest interest was in the 2nd, 5th and 6th districts, which combined represent parts of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Council members have said they likely will endorse candidates in their districts.

California Common Cause is helping a group of West Los Angeles homeowners leaders put together a slate of candidates.

City employee unions also are lining up support for a slate of candidates, according to union representative Julie Butcher.

``It's an alternative to the folks who are bought lock, stock and barrel by the mayor,'' Butcher said.

Close noted that it was a coalition of city employee unions that defeated the last charter reform initiatives in the 1960s and '70s. He said he is concerned that it will happen again.

Butcher released a poll conducted by a private firm for the unions, that found that 68 percent of voters have seen little or nothing of the efforts to reform the charter but 59 percent probably or definitely would vote for the initiative to create an elected charter reform commission.

However, a majority of those polled said they oppose giving the mayor more power.

To qualify for the ballot, those who filed declarations still must collect 500 signatures on nominating petitions and pay a $300 fee or collect 1,000 signatures on a nominating petition and pay no fee.
