11 L.A. SCHOOLS 'DISTINGUISHED'.

, are expected to be named 2004 California Distinguished Schools today - a showing that educators say signifies real progress the district is making.

The state Department of Education will announce more than 200 Distinguished Schools today. All the schools were required to show high academic standards and strong leadership during comprehensive, on-site assessments.

Plainview Avenue in Tujunga; Carpenter Avenue in Studio City; Fair Avenue in North Hollywood; Lanai Lanai (lənī`), island, 141 sq mi (365 sq km), central Hawaii, W of Maui island across the Auau Channel; Mt. In other parts of Los Angeles, the winners include Aldama; Griffin Avenue; Crescent Heights Language Arts/Social Justice Magnet; Windsor Hills Magnet and the Open Magnet Charter School; and the South Shores Visual and Performing Arts Magnet in San Pedro.

In 2002, the last time elementary schools were eligible for the award, only one LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  elementary school won. The district's previous record was seven elementary schools in 1987.

LAUSD educators were tickled by the news. At Plainview Elementary, a banner proclaiming the honor is already plastered on the side of the school and T-shirts declaring the news have been ordered.

``I'm very proud of what we're doing,'' Principal Pam Worden said.

Deputy superintendent Deputy Superintendent, or Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was a rank used by police forces of the British Empire. In some territories it was called Deputy District Superintendent of Police (DDSP).  Maria Ott said she hopes Plainview's success becomes a prototype for other LAUSD elementary schools.

``They've worked so hard and they've made such consistent growth,'' she said. ``They were always at least a couple of years ahead of the other schools.''

The California Distinguished Schools Program was started in 1985 and honors elementary and secondary schools in alternate years. Award winners are eligible for the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a United States government program created to honor schools. The Blue Ribbon award is considered to be the highest honor that an American school can achieve.  that is operated by the U.S. Department of Education.

More than 900 elementary schools in California completed the application process this year.

Earlier this month, state officials visited every Carpenter classroom, and spoke with children, parents and community leaders to validate the school's application, she said.

At Fair Avenue, students celebrated the news at an assembly Monday, Principal Rosalba Manrique said.

``We are so excited,'' she said. `'The teachers deserve this honor.''

Canter said the district's 450 elementary schools have been working feverishly to improve their academic programs and they have been outperforming high schools and middle schools on standardized tests over the past several years. They're focusing on professional development, doing more testing and using a new phonics-based reading program, Open Court.

``It's great,'' she said. ``But we're going to continue to do better.''
