106 killed in floods.


THE death toll from weekend floods following a storm in the Philippines rose to 106 yesterday.

 Ketsana triggered the worst flooding in more than 42 years in the capital, Manila Manila (mənĭl`ə), city (1990 pop. 1,601,234), capital of the Philippines, SW Luzon, on Manila Bay. Manila is the center of the country's largest metropolitan area, its chief port, and the focus of all governmental, commercial, industrial, , and nearby provinces when it swept through the islands.

Defence secretary Gilbert Teodoro said that soldiers, police and civilian volunteers rescued more than 4000 people and a clean-up operation began yesterday.

Ketsana roared across the northern Philippines near Manila on Saturday then began to blow away towards the South China Sea.
