"'Clean room' technology is still what we do, and I think better than anyone," Johnson says. But the new focus on diversifying is how the company plans to defend its place in the market. "One way you do it is by staying ahead of the game, by staying ahead of the pack."

As a small, high-tech company, Cimetrix must continually update its technology and reposition itself in the market, says Faulkner. "Because software moves so fast, you're constantly reinventing the software you use in your products. Your customers expect it. This is a big marketplace.
