100 Megabit Ethernet Hub with Internet Browser Management.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1996--ACN, Inc., announced today the introduction of 16- and 32-port Ethernet switches that operate at 10 and 100 megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576).

E.g. Ethernet can carry 10 Mbps.
, over copper and fiber cabling.

They feature very fast Store-and-Forward, Web browser management and up to 32 RJ-45 ports, making them major contenders in the high performance networking market.

The Store-and-Forward feature, as implemented by ACN, improves performance by dramatically reducing the runts Runts (also known as Fruit Runts) are candies sold by NestlĂ© under their Willy Wonka Candy Company brand. First seen on the market in 1982, they are fruit flavored candies in the shape of their respective fruits.  and excessive data fragments that clutter network traffic and slow down the passage of good data packets.

The new switches allow for optional network management modules that can be installed by the user when and if the need arises. The management agents accept standard SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  software, but it also makes it possible to use existing Web browsers, such as Netscape's, to manage remote locations.

Connections to the network backbone can be made with twisted pair cabling, shielded or unshielded (STP/UTP), and via fiberoptics. The high speed uplink connects local workgroups to the campus or enterprise network, and with the ACN switch the optional modules can be installed by the user when required. Since networks tend to evolve and change, the modular approach does not commit the user to irrevocable decisions. Bridging functions are performed at full wire speed.

The new products are labeled the BSW SERIES, and include the 16- and 32-port BSW-1600 and BSW-3200. The switches are made of durable metal, designed for 19" rack mounting or desktop operation. Status indicators keep track of all vital signs, including Link, Partition, Collision and Half or Full Duplex for each port and or the uplink modules. Both products comply with IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.3 MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1.  II, IEEE 802.1D, Ethernet MIB and repeater MIB.

The starting per-port price for the 16-port unit is $189, and $149 for the 32-port. Availability is off the shelf, and substantial quantity discounts apply.
