Captain Nichola Goddard Captain Nichola Kathleen Sarah Goddard MSM (May 2 1980 – May 17 2006) was the first female Canadian soldier killed in combat, and the 16th Canadian soldier killed in Canadian operations in Afghanistan.  was killed as she and her troops helped Afghan police fight off rebels.

Yesterday's violence was the worst there since the Taliban was smashed in the 2001 coalition invasion.

Coalition troops were caught up in firefights, two suicide bombs and a massive rebel assault.

The battles between the coalition and Taliban militants follow months of escalating violence.
