100,000TH NISSAN ALTIMA SOLD AHEAD OF SCHEDULE; REMAINS HOTTEST SELLING NEW NAMEPLATE FOR 1993 MODEL YEAR

CARSON, Calif., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan Motor Corp. has announced that its Nissan Altima sedan, already the best-selling newly introduced nameplate for the 1993 model year, reached the 100,000 sales mark in August, several months ahead of projection.
Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corp. in Smyrna, Tenn., where Altima is produced, has been working diligently to keep up with strong consumer demand for the new mid-size Nissan sedan.
"We're delighted that Altima has gotten off to such a fast start," said Earl Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "Clearly, consumers have been attracted to the Altima's unique combination of high quality, responsive performance, standard features and strong value for the money."
Since its introduction in September 1992, Altima sales-to-date (as of the Aug. 23 sales reporting period) are 104,920. On a model-year-to- date basis, Altima sales are running 86 percent ahead of 1992 Nissan Stanza sales, the car the Altima replaced. Altima's current segment share has increased to 4.5 percent of the Mid-Size Sedan category, compared to the Stanza's 2.5 percent share one year ago.
In addition, Altima has fueled a sales resurgence for Nissan's other popular sedans -- the Maxima and Sentra -- as well as the entire Nissan lineup. The company has experienced 10 consecutive monthly year-to-year sales increases during a period of declining sales for most Japanese nameplates.
Total Nissan sales for the 1993 model year-to-date (through July) are 499,516, returning Nissan to the No. 2 position among import nameplates.
Along with strong consumer response. Altima has been recognized for numerous awards, including an "I.D. Award" for outstanding consumer product design by International Design magazine, and "Best in Class" for vehicles priced between $10,000 - $15,000 by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine.
