Interactive Intranet Solution From Logical Design Solutions

Lucent Technologies Inc., the company that "makes the things that make communications work" is making its Intranet work for U.S. employees during its open enrollment period that starts Tuesday.

A new Intranet application, developed by Morristown, N.J.-based Logical Design Solutions, is letting all of Lucent's more than 100,000 U.S. employees compare health and insurance options and enroll, online, in the plan of their choice.

With the Intranet application, employees can easily compare and contrast benefits and premiums from the more than 12 major health insurance providers and more than 140 health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that Lucent offers as part of its benefits package.

Employees can use an interactive calculator calculator or calculating machine, device for performing numerical computations; it may be mechanical, electromechanical, or electronic. The electronic computer is also a calculator but performs other functions as well.  to see the effect each plan's deductions would have on their paychecks. Further, an "extranet" link to health providers allows employees to obtain detailed information from the insurance carriers, including listings of doctor networks and hospital affiliates.

When employees want to enroll in a new insurance plan, they can do so on line, directly from the application.

"Because of the number of employees we have and the number of healthcare plans we offer, we needed to find a high-end technical solution that would give our people a quality self-service alternative," said Kathy Gill, a principle with Lucent Technologies' human resources operation.

"The Intranet application is a powerful tool in enabling 'self-service' benefits administration," said Mimi Brooks, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "With our self-service HR Intranet platform, employees are empowered to get the information they need to make better decisions. And HR staff can focus on strategic business objectives and value-added initiatives instead of basic information requests and transactions."
