10.4-in. SVGA and VGA ANGLEVIEW color TFT LCDs announced by Mitsubishi; panels offer wide viewing angle, fast response, smallest module width.ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 1995--New ANGLEVIEW 10.4-in. color SVGA (Super VGA) A screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. Third-party vendors extended IBM's VGA display standard and were the first to use the term. SVGA has also referred to 1,024x768 resolutions. See PC display modes. and VGA (Video Graphics Array) The display standard for the PC. All PC display adapters support VGA, and Windows machines boot up in "VGA mode" before switching to higher resolutions. thin film transistor (TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film. TFT - Thin Film transistor ) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) were announced Tuesday by the Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc. Both displays feature a wide viewing angle, the smallest module width for SVGA and VGA TFT displays and fast response, along with rich, highly-saturated graphics and high-resolution text. The new TFT-LCDs complement Mitsubishi's existing line of 4.3-micron cell gap ANGLEVIEW products, which include a 9.5-in. VGA display, a 12.1-in. XGA (EXtended Graphics Array) A screen resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. The term stems from IBM's XGA display standard introduced in 1990, which extended VGA to 132-column text and interlaced 1,024x768x256 resolution. XGA-2 later added non-interlaced 1,024x768x64K. display and a 13-in. EWS EWS Early Warning System EWS Ewing's Sarcoma EWS Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick movie) EWS English, Welsh and Scottish (UK railway operator) EWS Employee Written Software (IBM) display. Designed for notebook and sub-notebook PCs, as well as POS (1) See point of sale and packet over SONET. (2) "Parent over shoulder." See digispeak. POS - point of sale terminal, multimedia, industrial control and gaming applications, the SVGA and VGA TFTs provide more than 260,000 true colors (18-bit) and 64 shades of gray standard with resolutions of 800 x 600 and 640 x 480, respectively. The displays are ideal for both MS Windows and Apple System 7 and 8 operating systems. Wide Viewing Angle, Fast Response Time Like all Mitsubishi ANGLEVIEW color TFT displays, the new panels feature a slim, 4.3-micron cell gap design to provide users a wide viewing angle. Additionally, the displays offer a fast response time of less than 60ms, making them ideal for the new generation of full-motion video multimedia applications. Smallest Module Width, Low Power, No Re-tooling Both new Mitsubishi color TFT displays measure 242.5 mm x 180 mm x 10 mm and have a power dissipation of 3.5W for the SVGA, nad 3.1W for the VGA. The module width (242.5 mm) is the smallest in the industry, and when combined with low power, enhances the units' application in portable systems design. Additionally, since both displays share the same compact dimensions, both standard VGA and super VGA product lines can be manufactured without the need to re-tool production lines. This in turn reduces production time and costs. "Mitsubishi Electric is world famous for its display technology, including direct view and projection televisions, professional display monitors and Diamond Vision stadium displays. This same leadership and technology know-how now brings ANGLEVIEW-brand TFT displays to the portable computing market place," said Dale Maunu, Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc. senior product marketing manager for flat panel displays. "Mitsubishi will continue to enhance its color TFT technology and products with slimmer glass and lower power dissipation in order to meet market demand for lighter weight and extended battery life portable systems of the future." Samples are available now for both the 10.4-in. VGA (AA10VA6C) and SVGA (AA10SA6C) displays. The SVGA display is priced at $1,550, with the VGA priced at $1,450 for sample quantities.
