10 TRASH FIRMS AWARDED CITY FRANCHISES.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Local residents and businesses renting temporary roll-off trash bins next year must choose from among 10 companies that have been awarded franchises by the city.

The franchises, which kick in Jan. 1 and will last five years, were approved by the City Council last month in a bid to help officials track recycling recycling, the process of recovering and reusing waste products—from household use, manufacturing, agriculture, and business—and thereby reducing their burden on the environment.  and waste generated from construction and demolition projects.

``By franchising waste haulers, the city can better monitor the amount of trash being generated and can help ensure a high level of customer service,'' assistant city manager Ken Striplin said in a statement. ``Residents and businesses will also still have the freedom to choose from a wide variety of haulers to meet their needs.''

Besides trash reporting, the haulers are required to keep their bins labeled and graffiti-free.
