DINARA SAFINA Dinara Safina (Russian: Дина́ра Муби́новна (Миха́йловна) Са́фина), born  

Titles in Rome and Madrid this year helped Safina climb to top of the world rankings. However, the Russian is desperate to break her duck in majors after finishing losing finalist at three of the past five Grand Slams.

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA Svetlana Aleksandrovna Kuznetsova (Cyrillic: Светлана Александровна  

Defeated Safina in the French Open Final. Has never gone further than quarter-finals at Wimbledon but will be among the favourites this year.

Comfortable on any surface.

JELENA JANKOVIC

Renowned for her consistency but has yet to make the breakthrough in a major. Has worked hard on her fitness following injury concerns on last year's Tour.

VENUS WILLIAMS

The five-time Wimbledon winner is again expected to be a strong contender this year. Early exits at Australian and French Opens will have left the American even more fired up.

SERENA WILLIAMS

Twice a Wimbledon champion, Serena SERENA Steam Explosion Resolution for Nuclear Applications  is aiming for her 11th Grand Slam title. The American has won just one title this year, the Australian Open, but has been troubled by injuries.

ELENA DEMENTIEVA

The 27-year-old Russian has reached the semi-finals at three of the last four majors but suffered third-round exit at French Open. Her strength is her speed but serve can let her down at times.

MARIA SHARAPOVA

The 2004 Wimbledon champion only recently returned after a long lay-off with a shoulder injury. She may lack match sharpness but will make up for that with determination.

Recent arrival in the top 10, Wozniacki has won four titles on the WTA WTA Washington Trails Association

 Tour in past year. The Danish teenager will be hoping to better last year's third-round appearance when she lost to Jankovic.

VICTORIA AZARENKA Another teenager to break into top 10 this year, the Belarusian has been in stunning form, winning titles in Brisbane, Memphis and Miami in 2009.

AGNIESZKA RADWANSKA

A threat on any surface, the Pole made the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon last year. Has won four WTA tour titles.
