10 RECOMMENDATIONS.The Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. Provide disciplined leadership, promote excellence and ensure integrity:Apply more discipline and focus to board's oversight of site acquisition and school construction. Demand excellence in the quality of employees and in their performance by requiring periodic performance evaluations. Develop new environmental, public health and safety policies: Develop and adopt public health and safety standards for the evaluation of environmental hazards at prospective school sites and for the management of existing schools. Implement all requirements imposed by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (or DTSC) is an agency of the government of the state of California. The agency monitors exposure to hazardous, radioactive, and toxic wastes in addition to enforcement of compliance by individual businesses, with regard to the completion of Belmont: Complete the process approved by the LAUSD school board and begun by the safety team with the Department of Toxic Substance Control, and implement those requirements.
