10 IS ENOUGH FOR S.C. CHRISTIAN BOYS' HOOPS TO PLAY TWO SHORT.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian High carries only 10 players on its boys' basketball roster. But each figures to make a contribution this season.

``It's like drawing names out of a hat,'' coach DeWayne Stephens said. ``All these guys can start any given day depending how we match up with the other team.''

What the Cardinals also have is an abundance of guards and balance. Expect to see high-pressure defense, fast-paced offense and balanced scoring.

It's a diversion from past years when Santa Clarita Christian relied on one or two players for the bulk of its offense. That formula helped he Cardinals to a Southern Section Division V-A V-A

``We don't have anybody who is head and shoulders above everyone else,'' Stephens said. ``There isn't really a drop off in talent.''

Tim Stephens, the coach's son, and Andrew Gilmore were part-time starters last season.

``The best thing is chemistry,'' Stephens said. ``They do really get along well. This group is extra special because they have come up together. Next year, they are going to be exceptional.''

``It could be a fun year if we learn to play with intensity for four quarters,'' Stephens said. ``If not, it could be pretty bad.''

The Cardinals will get an early test competing in the Montclair Prep and Victor Valley Christian tournaments before the start of league play. Santa Clarita Christian won the Victor Valley Christian title last year and finished second two years ago.

The big question surrounds Santa Clarita Christian's inside game and rebounding. They will need strong efforts from football players Grayem, a 6-4 nose guard, and 6-2 David Hurst in the middle. Grayem and Hurst are the team's only players taller than 6-1.

``We're not real big and not real mature,'' Stephens said. ``If we can have six to eight points from everybody and have 10 kids score, it will balance everything out. We will be pretty hard to stop with fresh bodies and intensity for 32 minutes.''
