No doubt Dissertations or thesis is a graduate-educated professional''s first intensive experience in academic writing.

A dissertation or thesis is a document that present''s the author''s research and result and is submitted in support of contention for a degree or professional qualification. The word "thesis" comes from a Greek word which means "position", and refers to an intellectual proposition, whereas "Dissertation" comes from a Latin term and means "discourse" or "dialogue".

So we can safely derive a definition of dissertation that is, a presentation of dialogue on a specific topic about its approval or rejection with prove and evidences in a defined way can be called dissertation.

In other words Dissertation is a comprehensive discourse on a subject especially submitted for a higher degree in a University. The CPSP dissertation is a document that contains relevant details of the research work conducted by the fellowship trainee involving to the problem or topic selected. The intention of writing dissertations is to develop skills in fellowship trainees for:

? Collection and compilation of data,
? Analyzing and reviewing relevant literature available on the subject; both national and international
? Developing writing habits as an art for writing scientific articles

Dissertation writing demands special attention and skills. It''s not like essay writing. Your future may depend on the success of your dissertations project. It demands lots of concentration and research capabilities. Here are some major factors which determine the effectiveness or quality of a dissertation. A successful dissertation should always possess or require the following qualities

? Be original
? Follow academic principles ? be objective, tentative, ordered, consistent, clearly and concisely expressed, and correctly referenced.
? Demonstrate:
? extensive, relevant reading
? an understanding of underpinning themes
? the ability to gather data and evidence systematically
? the ability to interpret, analyze and evaluate data and evidence
? an ability to present data and evidence accurately and appropriately
? critical thinking ? raise and discuss issues, not just present findings
? an ability to report effectively
