10,500 JOBS CUT BY VAUXHALL BOSSES.

Byline: CLINTON MANNING

VAUXHALL'S parent company General Motors is to press ahead with plans to axe 10,500 jobs across Europe.

The announcement came 24 hours after the US motor giant scrapped the sale of Vauxhall to Canadian parts group Magna.

Union leaders hailed that as a "fantastic decision" believing it would lift any threat to the jobs of the 5,500 UK workforce.

But it seems GM bosses are determined to restructure the group's European operations. Last night, unions remained hopeful the UK would still escape the worst of any cuts.

Tony Woodley, of union Unite, said he believed Vauxhall's UK workers had a brighter future as part of General Motors.

"Better the devil you know," he said, adding: "There is no doubt there will be some job losses in Britain.

"But staying in the family gives us a much better chance of being treated fairly."
