10% IRISH TEENS ARE DEPRESSED; Therapists battle to stem illness.

ONE in 10 Irish teenagers is suffering from chronic depression, a study has revealed.

 estimates that up to 20% of the population are likely to suffer mental health issues, many of which are not being properly addressed.

While medication has a role in treating psychological illness like depression, CBTI would like to see more medical professionals suggesting "talking therapies" and "self-help" options, especially cognitive behaviour therapy, to their patients.

Marina O'Donovan, co-ordinator of CBTI, said: "CBT effectively teaches people to be their own therapist, giving them skills to manage problems.

"UK and US evidence-based research shows high success rates for CBT in many psychological disorders, often ahead of those for drug treatments."

COLLEGE CONCERNS

ONE in three college students is experiencing mental health problems, a university report has claimed.

The figures coincide with the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week at college campuses across Ireland this week.
