1.2 MILLION AMERICANS ESTIMATED TO MOVE MEMORIAL DAY WEEK
MIAMI, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- An estimated 1.2 million Americans will move to new homes this Memorial Day week (May 23-31), one of the busiest moving periods of the year, according to Ryder Truck Rental, the world's largest truck rental and leasing company.
Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of the peak summer moving season. Of the more than 42 million Americans who are expected to change residences this year, 19 million of them will move between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
"Memorial Day is a popular time to move for several reasons," said Gerald R. Riordan, Ryder's senior vice president and general manager- Consumer Rental. "Children are finished with school, the weather is good and the three-day weekend gives people some extra time to complete their move."
This summer, do-it-yourself movers will have access to 8,500 new consumer rental trucks recently purchased by Ryder in one of the largest single non-governmental orders of trucks in U.S. history. The trucks are available in 10-foot, 15-foot, 20-foot and 24-foot lengths and come equipped with those comfort and convenience features identified by do-it-yourself movers as most desirable in a recent market research study conducted by Ryder.
Nearly 80 percent of those relocating in 1992 will move themselves, using either a rented truck or borrowed vehicle, according to a recent national study.
The study showed a record 12.3 million do-it-yourself movers used rental trucks in 1991, a 4.5 percent increase over 1990. The use of rental trucks has risen steadily during the last five years, according to the study, while the use of owned or borrowed vehicles has remained flat during this period. The use of commercial movers declined in 1991 to its lowest level in the last five years.
Self-movers who use rental trucks will save an average of 52 percent, and as much as 89 percent, compared with the cost of using a commercial mover, the study showed.
"Do-it-yourself moving continues to gain in popularity as consumers discover the benefits of moving themselves," continued Riordan. "Ryder provides do-it-yourself truck renters with advice and assistance on the entire moving process -- from selecting the proper size truck, to planning and packing, to settling into a new community."
Do-it-yourself movers can obtain a free copy of Ryder's "Mover's Advantage," a 21-page color moving guide and planning kit for the self mover on how to prepare for and execute a trouble-free do-it-yourself move.
