world's largest florist, today announced a Valentine's Day Valentine's Day: see Saint Valentine's Day.

holiday sales increase of 32 percent over last year.

This comes on the heels of a record breaking Christmas season in which the company was up 39 percent over the previous year. This is significant given that as a category overall retail sales in recent months have been uneven, with many retailers posting disappointing results.

"The Valentine's holiday is not just one day anymore. We are really seeing a trend toward multiple purchases being made for the entire Valentine's week, which has created a brisk sales base," said Jim McCann, president of 1-800-FLOWERS. "This isn't just a spike in sales, it reflects an ongoing upward trend for our business and the floral industry Floral industry is one of the major industries in many developing and underdeveloped countries. Floriculture as an industry began in the late 1800s in England, where flowers were grown on a large scale on the vast estates.  as a whole."

McCann credits the increase in floral sales this year to a number of new factors, one being the effects of an aging baby boom population, who are increasingly more comfortable using flowers to express their emotions to a variety of different people, including their children and business associates. There were also greater numbers of women sending flowers to other adult women, such as daughters sending flowers to their mothers, etc.

While men remain the most significant customer base for floral purchases, what has changed is who those purchases are for. 1-800-FLOWERS' Market Research Group (MRG MRG Merge

The company also attributes the increase in part to a halo effect halo effect The beneficial effect of a physician or other health care provider on a Pt during a medical encounter, regardless of the therapy or procedure provided.
