STUDENTS are being increasingly targeted by burglars, figures confirmed yesterday.

A survey carried out by an Irish security company has revealed one in three Dublinbased students have been affected by theft in the past.

It also exposed that students renting in Dublin compromise on their security and safety to save cash.

520 and EUR650 a month on accommodation off campus.

"Cheaper properties are often less secure and pose a higher risk.

"Furthermore, cheaper properties often have more students staying in them - increasing the value of goods in the property and making it much more attractive to any would-be thief."

Students are easy prey for burglars - almost half of all students surveyed have goods worth more than EUR2,000 in their flats.

And 84 per cent of all students surveyed own a mobile phone, 66 per cent own computers and 66 per cent own iPods or MP3 players.

But only 40 per cent would lock them away when leaving their accommodation and 76 per cent have no insurance to cover them if they get robbed.

Emmett O'Rafferty, chairman of Top Security, said: "Many students are living away from home for the first time and have never had to think about security before - it was perceived to be their parents' concern.

"The problem is compounded by the fact that students are under increasing financial pressure and may be forced to live in substandard accommodation leaving them further at risk."
