1 in 10 Black teenage girls tested HIV-positive in D.C.
Washington, D.C., has one of the highest AIDS rates in the country;
yet, fewer of those who are infected are seeking treatment, according to
the advocacy group Metro TeenAIDS. Nationally, young African Americans
were disproportionately affected by HIV infection, accounting for 55% of
all HIV infections reported among persons ages 13-24 in 2004, notes the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overall, more infections
occurred in 2006 among people under age 30 than any other group, the CDC
reports.
