1 WTC beams go up.


One World Trade Center has begun its march into the sky.

Workers last week began installing the first few steel columns for the tower, the tallest one planned for Ground Zero. Twenty-four columns will be installed in all come fall. Each one weighs 70 tons and is about 60 feet long.

Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, self-sustaining public corporation established in 1921 by the states of New York and New Jersey to administer the activities of the New York–New Jersey port area, which has a waterfront of c.  said the columns will make it possible for the lower floors of the tower to be built out. The perimeter columns were manufactured overseas in Luxembourg. The steel plates were then shipped and fabricated fab·ri·cate

Redevelopment at Ground Zero has taken much longer than anyone has anticipated. Among the issues have been disagreements on design, cost overruns and a dispute over a lease between developer Larry Silverstein Larry A. Silverstein (born 1932 in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York) is an American billionaire real estate investor and operator and the head of Silverstein Properties, a real estate development group.  and the Port Authority.
