Tour's 1997 road show, otherwise known as the ``Year of the Tiger Volume I,'' concludes this week in Houston with its marquee act in need of some space. Tiger Woods
It seems that 10 months of travel, courtesy cars, pampering and playing some of the best golf courses in the world can plum tucker a guy out. So starting in December it will be time to chill. ``It will definitely be a break from golf. There will be no practicing, no playing, no golf clubs, period. It will just be hanging out with my friends, going on vacation and just doing something away from the game,'' Woods said earlier this week from the Champion's Golf Club, where he starts play today in the season-ending Tour Championship. But golf is his job now, albeit a great one. It's tougher to go to work some days than others. Getting paid to do something all year is a lot harder than playing a summer schedule of amateur events. ``With professional golf it's like a 10-month season, so that's a lot longer than a little short burst of three months,'' Woods said. So far he has not locked in next year's schedule, but would like to play the AT&T National Pro-Am with his father Earl, if his health permits. This year also brought some closure to the question of what happened to his namesake, Tiger Phong, with whom Earl served in Vietnam. Golf Digest Golf Digest is a monthly golf magazine published by Advance Publications in the United States. It is a generalist golf publication covering recreational golf and men's and women's competitive golf. discovered Phong died in 1976 while being held in a Vietcong concentration camp. This summer the Woods family met the Phong family at Tiger's boyhood home in Cypress. ``It was very tough for all of us,'' Woods said. ``My dad obviously had a hard time, I had a hard time. It was a great way to put an ending to the entire issue. Everything that we have assumed did happen, unfortunately. Things that we didn't know about also happened. It was nice to meet his kin, and from there it was a real bonding experience.'' Now he's got a chance to bookend this season by finishing it in much the same way he started it, earning a big paycheck by beating a select field of the tour's best players. He's been working on his game since the Ryder Cup Ryder Cup Biennial team golf event first held in 1927. It was originally played between teams of golfers from the U.S. and Britain; since 1979 players opposing the U.S. have been chosen from all of Europe. The trophy was donated by the British seed merchant Samuel Ryder. . ``Everything is coming around. I'm actually putting pretty well, my short game is good. My iron play is coming around and I'm driving the ball well. It's just a matter of having everything click at the same time,'' Woods said. ``You've got to understand that it's my first year so I think I did pretty good.''
