"It's one of the things people wait for all year long," said Masood Rana, president of the Islamic Center of Northridge. "It's the most important month of the calendar."

During Ramadan, Muslims eat a light meal following the sundown evening prayer, and a larger meal later in the night. It is also common to eat a small meal before dawn, when fasting begins.

Young children, the elderly, pregnant women and the sick are exempted from the fasting. Others, such as travelers, also may be exempted from fasting for a number of days, but they must make those days up during the rest of the year.

Muslims also are encouraged to read or recite the entire Koran, the holy book of the Muslims, during Ramadan. Muslims believe that the Koran originally was revealed to the prophet Mohammed during the month of Ramadan.

At the end of Ramadan, the fast is broken with Eid ul-Fitr Eid ul-Fitr or Id-Ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. , a three-day celebration of prayers, feasts and gift-giving.

The Islamic Center of Northridge plans to hold Eid celebrations at its new center in Granada Hills, which is expected to open at the end of Ramadan, Rana said.

Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, Ramadan begins about 11 days earlier each year. This means that during a lifetime, a Muslim will fast during the longer, harder summer days and also during the shorter, easier winter days, as is the case this year.
