Now they are selling it along with 2 DEL, a plate not used in the sitcom, as they head for retirement in Spain.

The couple bought the plates for a modest sum in the 80s, before Del Boy Trotter, played by David Jason, became famous.

They have been used on quality motors owned by the Herberts, including a Rolls Royce, an E-type Jag and Mercedes.

Gill, 49, of Maidstone, Kent, said: "The plates have been part of the family for 20 years.

"Derek was a bit of a Del in his younger days and we are both huge fans of the show and will be sad to part with the plates.

"We are open to offers of around pounds 50,000 for the pair.

"We have had some interest but no deal yet."

Derek and Gill had offered show bosses 1 DEL a decade earlier.

Gill added: "A producer said he could never see Del with a personalised plate.

"But 10 years later they called back and we were delighted to lend them it."

In the show, the plate was on a Roller bought by Rodney for Del after the pair sold a watch they found for pounds 6.2million.

As they enter the pub, Del issues the line: "I'll buy the sandwiches 'cos you bought the Rolls."
