1,600 year old shops are found.


REMAINS of an ancient Roman shopping parade have been dug up in the middle of Cirencester.

The 1,600-year-old site was hidden under the floorboards of the historic Corn Hall in the Gloucestershire town.

Workers came across the remains while carrying out renovations.

Archaeologists Archaeology is a discipline that was virtually unknown until the 19th century. Archaeology, originally an amateur pastime, is becoming increasingly popular, and it is now possible for archaeologists to become minor celebrities as a result of media exposure.  say it is is the most significant Roman discovery in the town in the last 50 years.

Walls were discovered 10 feet below floorboards of the 19th century hall with remains of shops.

There was also evidence of Ermine Street Ermine Street, Saxon name for the Roman road in Britain that ran from London to Lincoln and York. It was one of the four main highways of Saxon England. The name is derived from the Earningas, a group of people who inhabited an area in Cambridgeshire through which , the famous Roman road which ran from Silchester to Gloucester.
