AROUND 1,200 workers are to lose their jobs at Eircom eircom Group plc is the largest telecommunications operator in the Republic of Ireland.

As Bord Telecom Éireann plc, the company was (until 1999) a state monopoly; as a private company it continues to dominate many telecommunications areas, its main competitors being ntl:
 in a costcutting deal agreed last night.

The telecoms company will also enforce a two-year pay freeze across the entire group and performance bonuses are being cancelled.

Eircom's acting chief Cathal Magee said: "The company and the union representatives have demonstrated willingness to make difficult but necessary decisions." The job losses will happen over the next two years as bosses aim for annual savings of EUR EUR
