MORE than 1,000 men are paying for sex with prostitutes every day in Ireland, it was claimed in the Dail last night.

The staggering figure emerged as Fine Gael called for tough new laws to tackle the "haven" Ireland has become for sex trafficking and illegal brothels.

The party presented a motion last night to address current weaknesses in the law which it claims facilitates the slave trade into and through the country. "Human trafficking is the fuel that keeps prostitution on the road as evidenced by the fact that 97% of the 1,000 women involved in indoor prostitution are migrants and that 90% of potential human trafficking victims are being investigated on the basis of sexual exploitation, some involving minors.

INSUFFICIENT

"The Government's attempts to tackle sex trafficking have been, at best, piecemeal and insufficient."

Fine Gael has put down a number of proposals which it has urged the Government to adopt to stamp out to put an end to by sudden and energetic action; to extinguish; as, to stamp out a rebellion s>.

These include putting the Garda Organised Crime Unit in charge of investigating human trafficking instead of the Garda Immigration Bureau.

It also called on the Government to end the practice of treating sex slaves as illegal immigrants first rather than victims.

The party also want an end to the policy of placing rescued sex workers in asylum centres, claiming there is growing evidence that ruthless gangs are targeting vulnerable girls from these hostels and luring them into a life of prostitution.
